Students will audition, rehearse and perform while assisting in costuming and producing a large-scale musical theatre performance. Singing, dancing and acting will be incorporated into this class; however, lack of experience should not be a deterrent to participating. Instruction will be provided for required skills and there will be many roles available for students of all abilities and interests. This is a performance class. Students will sign a contract committing to attend classes, dress rehearsals and their performance. Performances include two days of dress rehearsals followed by one performance.

MUSICAL THEATER
Course Description: The
Summit Academy high school musical theater class will produce one musical over
the course of the school year. Students
will be required to prepare and audition for the musical with the knowledge
that parts will be assigned to all students who are registered for the class
and audition in front of the class. In
addition, students will learn skills associated with musical theatre in our
school productions and complete some projects that provide academic
reinforcement to develop those skills. For the latter part of the year students will
collaborate to perform a scene for the spring performance. The following is a list of skills and
understanding student will have at the completion of this course;
Skills and Understandings:
- Define the major roles of those
involved in putting on a musical production
- Perform basic choreography
- Sing as part of a chorus or
individually
- Perform in role as a character
- Compare and contrast musical theatre
and other theatrical forms
- Integrate a variety of art forms
(music, dance, etc)
- Learn basic skills of those who work
“behind the scenes” including costuming, set design, and tech crew.
Grading Policy: Students will be graded in three areas:
Participation, Preparedness and Projects.
The first portion of the grade is participation. To receive full participation credit,
students must remain focused during rehearsal time, take suggestions and make
changes accordingly, and stay engaged in the activities during the class
period. This is not a grade for talent,
it is a grade for work ethic. If a
student is disruptive or disrespectful, his or her participation grade will
suffer. Because attendance is a vital
part of a performance class, each student will only be allowed 2 excused
absences each semester. Additional
absences will result in receiving a grade of 0 for participation. Students must abide by the participation
contract or they may be asked to drop the course.
The second portion of the grade is for preparedness. Students must be prepared each week with
script and pencil. Students must also
follow the rehearsal schedule and have lines, blocking, choreography and music
memorized according to the schedule.
The third and final portion of the grade is projects
and assignments. Students will have occasional
homework assignments to complete during the school year as well as be required
to serve on one of the committees assigned to assist in different aspects of
the production. Students will not only
be responsible for learning their own part in the performance, but will be
required to perform in the chorus or participate on stage crew for other
classes performing.
